Where Does Chocolate Come From?
Chocolate comes from the fruit of the Cacao tree, scientifically referred to as Theobroma Cacao. These trees grow on small farms in West Africa, Southeast Asia, and North and Central America. The tree’s fruit called cacao pods, each contains about 40-50 seeds, more commonly referred to as beans. These beans are the main ingredient for chocolate. It has been said the Olmec, Mayan, and Aztec civilizations were the first to discover the cacao bean. The beans were used by Aztec and other civilizations to create ceremonial beverages.
A Spanish Conquistador by the name of Don Hernán Cortez can be credited with the widespread infatuation of chocolate as well as chocolate’s evolution into a popular commercial commodity. His expedition returned from the ‘New World’ in 1528 and with them brought cocoa beans. The consumption of chocolate quickly spread from Spain eastward across western Europe. It quickly appeared in France and soon afterward, England. Served only in royal courts and special “chocolate houses,” chocolate was exclusively saved for the wealthy social elite.
In 1847, Joseph Fry created a steam engine specifically designed for grinding beans. This new invention allowed chocolate beans to be processed and refined on a much larger scale thereby diminishing the exclusivity of the South American delicacy. Soon afterward in 1850, bars of solid chocolate sometimes flavored or filled became widely popular and quickly began being manufactured and sold.
