Let Your Fruitcake Fly!

Located a mere seven miles away from the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, sits the small town of Manitou. Nestled in a shadowy basin at the foot of Pikes Peak, the town is a wonderous hodgepodge of modern culture and historical lore. Despite its somewhat ambiguous location, Manitou Springs thrives off a steady stream of tourist foot traffic driven by one-of-a-kind festivals, events, and traditions.

One of the town’s most popular events occurs every January, just on the heels of Christmas. On this day, the entire town of Manitou congregates to celebrate National Fruitcake Toss Day - a day entirely dedicated to hurling fruitcakes as far as a human can muster. This past year Collin Street Bakery not only attended the celebration, but we also participated!

Now, why would a bakery who prides themselves on creating the world’s best fruitcake participate in an event devoted to hurling our chief product?!

The answer is surprisingly simple... Not all fruitcakes are great. We are not afraid to admit it, some fruitcakes are just bad.

Collin Street Bakery fruitcake, however, is really good. While we are staunch defenders of our DeLuxe® and Texas Pecan Cake recipes, we do not aim to defend ALL fruitcakes. Some fruitcakes are just gross and they deserve to be tossed.

Although, we haven’t always felt this way. For a while, our Bakery was a strong advocate of ALL fruitcake. That’s why despite receiving a yearly invitation to attend The Great Fruitcake Toss, Collin Street had never accepted. The inferred implication was the word ‘toss’ was synonymous with ‘to throw away’ and we didn’t want to be an advocate of trashing our beloved cakes.

But the truth is, all fruitcakes are NOT created equal. Bad fruitcake should be tossed… hurled, chunked, and catapulted. And when tossing is completed, a fresh, delicious fruitcake should be ready and waiting to eat. So that’s why this past year, we loaded ourselves down with free DeLuxe® Fruitcake samples and flew up north to reward the world’s most trained fruitcake tossers with a taste of the world’s best fruitcake.

Oh, man! I wish I had known you were coming because I would've driven up from Pueblo, less than an hour from me. (I am a lifelong fruitcake lover as well as your customer.) I was amazed to read your story for I too apparently misunderstood Manitou's festival. I thought it was all about hating fruitcake and dissing the dessert altogether. For many, many years I've defended fruitcake, mostly at holiday time. In fact, I just did so in a Facebook alumni group a few days ago. I provided a link to your website for those who love fruitcake the way I do. (Well, I could eat it every day, so probably not many people would do that.) Our mom bought fruitcake every year for our family in Chicago and when we became adults, she would send us each a Collins DeLuxe. After her passing in 2000, I bought them when I could afford to. This past December, I ordered for our family in Colorado and had a gift pack sent to my brother and his wife in Pennsylvania. I received a thank you email immediately. In fact, I'm trying a few of your other products. So far, so yummy! Please give us a heads-up if you're planning another Colorado trip so that I can meet you, take selfies, get your autograph, share some fruitcake, and bask in important things in life - friendship and harmony! Best wishes for a wonderful 2020. Sincerely, Louise

Having purchased Collin Street's best for many years. I have trued many times to extend the opportunity to taste these wondrous treats with little success to family and friends.
This year I soaked my November arrived deluxe fruitcake in my favorite spirit to be ready for the Holidays. The pungent smell proved irresistible to those"Sam-I-Am" non-believers. I now fear I have created some fruitcake monsters for the next Holiday season. In the mean time, I will happily continue my ongoing weekly addiction to these ,one of a kind, deluxe fruitcakes through out 2020.

I took great pleasure in reading about your trip to the Great Fruitcake Toss. Over 45 years ago my family started enjoying your fruitcake with my Gramma, who would get one as a gift each year from one of her daughters (one of my mom's nutty sisters). After Gramma died, I decided to keep the family tradition going and have been sending fruitcakes each year to my parents and siblings. So now five generations of my family have enjoyed the Deluxe.
I hope to continue our family tradition for many years to come.

My mom also ordered these wonderful cakes for her brother and sisters and my husband and brother for many years before she passed away. In 2013 I took over and send them to my cousin and my husband. My cousin mentioned that she missed them when her mom passed so she was given the chance to keep living her childhood. When the grinch stole them off my porch this year Collin Street replaced them with no problem. My husband is thrilled and my diet is in jeopardy. Thank you for everything.

I have had many fruitcakes I would love to toss but never a Collins fruitcake. Collins fruitcakes are such a treat every year that we look forward to. We have never had anything that was not good from Collins but the fruitcake is so good that you could almost imagine your mother making it at home, it’s that fresh and tasty!

When I was a kid, my parents bought the A&P brand up in Michigan. Believe it or not, but I think it was as good as the Collin Street ones. After that chain went under, I kept looking for a replacement fruitcake as good as the ones I remember. Never found one.
However, once I moved to Texas I finally found one! Now all of the enlightened ones in my family who love fruitcake get 1, or 2, or ? every Christmas. And if we are driving by the store on I-35 in Waco, it is as much of a must stop as Bucee's and West, TX kolaches. Maybe more?
